Lauderdale-By-the-Sea residents and visitors know that August is one of the best times of the year in our little beach town…it’s the start of Florida’s regular lobster season! The regular eight-month season started on August 6 and runs through March 31, 2020. What better place to hunt for spiny lobsters than here in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, Florida’s Beach Diving Capital?
In the morning, diver down flags can be spotted off our shoreline as excited lobster hunters dive down looking for bugs (aka lobsters, for those unfamiliar with the lingo). These little sea creatures are fun to catch, and yummy to eat! Our beaches are open from sunrise to sunset, so we encourage visitors to get out on the water and have some fun during lobster season. Remember to respect daily bag limits, and be sure to have all the necessary licenses and permits before you head out. Two dive shops, located in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, are open and offer equipment rentals and charter boat rides to make it even easier to enjoy a day of lobstering.
If you still want to enjoy the views of the beautiful marine life in our waters, but want to stay closer to shore, why not try snorkeling right from the beach? Our coral reef is just 100 yards off the coast, along the entire length of the Town. This underwater habitat is home to tropical fish, corals, barrel sponges, sea fans, lobsters, and more. Coral reefs are one of the most biologically diverse marine eco-systems on earth.
In addition to hunting lobsters and exploring the reef, you’ll find several eateries and quaint shops just a short stroll or bike ride from the beach or your hotel. If you’re planning to stay in Town for a few days, many of our hotels are located right on the sand and offer summer rates. And don’t forget you don’t need a car while here in Town – everything is within walking or biking distance.
While you’re enjoying your day on the water, snap a photo of the beautiful corals, or show off your lobster haul. We encourage visitors to our beach town to snap a photo or two from their visit and tag us on Facebook and Instagram using #LoveLBTS. You could be featured on the Town’s feed for all to see.
Whether it’s a day spent hunting bugs, snorkeling, or beach diving remember to relax… you’re here.
